[Hero Story] Ji-min 'Wraith' Kwon’s Beautiful Farewell

[Hero Story] Ji-min 'Wraith' Kwon’s Beautiful Farewell
Hyung-ki Lee, a famous Korean poet’s representative work “Nak-hwa (Fallen Blossoms)” begins with the verse; ‘To know, with certainty, when it's time to go.Now that is a thing of true beauty to behold’.There lies an aureole behind a person who makes and accepts tough calls to determine one’s own parting, as if it paves the bright future ahead.

Ji-min ‘Wraith’ Kwon, the main support at JinAirGreenWings League of Legends team announced his unexpected retirement, despitehis outstanding performance at LoL Champions Korea (LCK) 2018. It was a pity to let him go, but there was nothing we could do; Wraith was determined and unyielding.

We wanted to hear out his words of farewell, how he would wrap up and recall the brightest moments of his career which began in 2012.

◆The big decision to retire
"I became aware of my limit. I wasn’t playing as good as I was, and I wasn’t as passionate as before. It came to me that ‘I wouldn’t be as good’ as top-tier players."

Wraith looked into his own limits, something others would never be able to see but himself. He came to measure his own passion and confidence, and after several years of self-assessment, Wraith made up his mind in 2018, to retire from professional gaming.
"Throughout my career I always thought of retiring. I was always concerned about ‘how well I fit with the job', and ‘how good I will be’. In the past, I have witnessed my development, and I was confident that I can develop further. But this season I wasn’t sure."

Wraith confessed that his personality wasn’t the best fit with professional gaming. Of a retiring disposition, Wraith found it difficult to live with others at gaming house and communicate with fans. However, Wraith was quite good at what he had to do; yet another reason why his retirement leaves great regret to many.

"Many people told me not to, but I thought my decision was what mattered the most. It was settled when I came to the decision."

◆A single pinch of regret
When asked about his prime, he recalled two moments; when he played under the nickname ‘Icebear’, and 2015-2016 when he played for Samsung Galaxy (currently Gen-G eSports). He recollected the times as when he was confident that 'he could beat absolutely anyone'.

The most memorable moment of his career was also when he played at LoL World Championship (the Worlds) 2016. He looked back on the match against Splyce, “I was ecstatic to win in front of so many people, at the biggest stage there is”. A thrill only professional gamers can enjoy.

But of course, there were downturns. Being subbed midst Samsung’s outstanding run, Wraith reestablished his resolve to “show better performance” and moved to JinAirGreenWings to again be recognized of his presence, where he played for another season.

Drawn into a graph, Wraith’s career was a steep curve, half upward, half downward, and 100% decent. While “not the best form of retirement” as described by Wraith himself, he was never regretful of his past.

"I do have small regrets about not being able to perform better, but I did my best, and it’s okay. It also comes to me that ‘I wouldn’t be certain that I would have played way better, even if I could go back to the past’. I did my best, in ways I could.”

◆'Wraith', a professional gamer
"It wasn’t bad. In fact, I am quite satisfied. I was loved by lots of fans. It turned out to be better than I expected in the first place."

The five years of decent career now remains a ‘wonderful experience’. "I am not sure if I would have been as passionate or have been loved by fans if I had not become a professional gamer." Wraith was a great professional gamer, and he became a better person thanks to his occupation.

Wraith now plans on getting a good rest. On the question about the plans afterward, Wraith responded with a bashful smile, “none.” He is now enjoying a comfortable and less stressed life.

"I plan to get some rest for a little longer. I am spending my time, laying in a sprawl, talking to myself, ‘this is peace’. It’s my own way of recharging my batteries. It takes quite a while to recharge mine, but it wears fast (laughs). I will set my troubles aside for a while and keep myself on the charger for a while."
Nearing the end of the interview, I asked Wraith for ‘a word of farewell’ to the fans who loved him and were worried about the sudden announcement. And his words were indeed the words of short parting, not the words of last goodbye.

"Thanks for the great support and love. I want to apologize for the sudden retirement, but it is okay to set your worries aside, as I have no specific problem that led me to making the decision. I’m not sure how to wrap up. I just want everyone to be happy."
